Census CIO to depart at the end of April
The U.S. Census Bureau is set to lose its chief information officer at the end of the month, with Luis Cano saying he plans to retire via his personal LinkedIn profile

“After over 40 years of dedicated federal service, the time has come for me to embark on a new chapter: retirement,” Cano wrote on Tuesday.

Per his post, Cano’s career began in joining the Navy in 1981, where he served as a radioman. Following his military career, Cano transitioned into civil service, spending over 20 years with the National Weather Service before being reassigned to the Census Bureau in 2017.

While serving as Census’ chief of the Decennial Contracts Execution Office, Cano helped complete the 2020 nationwide count, which featured major modernization contracts between Census and tech companies like CDW-G to update their data intake systems. Following this effort, Cano was named CIO at the agency.

“Looking back, I am profoundly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and the remarkable people I’ve had the privilege to work with along the way,” he wrote. “As I move forward, I’m excited to explore new possibilities and continue to contribute in meaningful ways.”
