Edith Cowan spends $50m on science, cyber push - The Australian Financial Review

Responding to news on Friday that the United Kingdom would focus on international students to boost higher education after Brexit, Mr Tehan told The Australian Financial Review that he wanted universities to be more agile and responsive, and to "encourage greater collaboration" between industry and higher education providers "to make the Australian experience even more attractive".

Edith Cowan University vice-chancellor of Steve Chapman said the cyber hub had two operations centres for teaching, the smaller of which could sit 20 students. That room could also be rented by companies during a cyber emergency and be isolated from electronic surveillance and the rest of the campus.

"Physically it will be two minutes from the university's security research institute that's two minutes walk to all our researchers," Professor Chapman said.

In the science building, the Cyber Security CRC has rented space from the university. The WA Police had their own cyber operations centre and students would be available to work on corporate projects, including those related to resources companies.

The building had been funded out of the university's own reserves. Despite the outlay, it produced a surplus of $29 million in 2017 and $22 million in 2018 according to its annual report.

Professor Chapman, whose own field of research is chemistry, commissioned the architects to place a periodic table on one entire side of the new science building, partly to send a message.

"What one thing could you put on a building that encapsulates everything in the known universe?" he said.

"Everything you experience, everything you are made of is represented on the periodic table. It contains so much information and so much predictive power."
