MetaMask cryptocurrency wallets stolen via Google ads

Users of the MetaMask cryptocurrency wallet have been targetted by a phishing scam over the past week which has been luring in victims with Google search ads. MetaMask has a user base of over one million customers. They offer an Ethereum cryptocurrency wallet in the Google browser via an extension which allows distributed applications to read from the blockchain. When installing the extension, a user can either import an existing wallet or create a new one with a secret seed phrase which allows access to the wallet.

Currently, it is unclear how many MetaMask customers fell victim to the scam, however, some have said that their wallets were emptied after clicking on a fraudulent search ad which was promoted on the MetaMask site. Unfortunately, the scam is still active and targeting users, but under a new domain which is being consistently promoted by Google search ads.
