San Francisco 49ers hit by BlackByte ransomware attack following FBI alert

Professional American rugby team San Francisco 49ers suffered a significant ransomware attack this week that possibly resulted in threat actors stealing the team’s financial data.

Operators of the BlackByte ransomware gang listed San Francisco 49ers on a dark web forum as one of its victims on Saturday. The hackers named the stolen file as "2020 Invoices," but have not made any ransom demand so far. 

The hackers haven’t specified the amount of data they were able to get their hands on. However, after they made their claim public, San Francisco 49ers confirmed the ransomware attack in a statement to the press.

According to a spokesperson for 49ers, on Sunday, the team became aware of a "network security incident"  which temporarily disrupted its corporate IT network systems. The 49ers said that they have notified law enforcement and hired third party cyber security firms to investigate the ransomware attack.

“Upon learning of the incident, we immediately initiated an investigation and took steps to contain the incident,” the team told The Record. “While the investigation is ongoing, we believe the incident is limited to our corporate IT network; to date, we have no indication that this incident involves systems outside of our corporate network, such as those connected to Levi’s Stadium operations or ticket holders.”

News of the cyber attack comes not long after the FBI and U.S. Secret Service issued an alert concerning the BlackByte ransomware gang. “As of November 2021, BlackByte ransomware had compromised multiple US and foreign businesses, including entities in at least three US critical infrastructure sectors (government facilities, financial, and food & agriculture).
