Confirmed with a 74-25 vote, Kratsios will return to the OSTP where he served as its de facto head during Trump’s first term before a permanent head was approved. Trump then nominated him in March 2019 to serve as the White House chief technology officer. Trump nominated him again in December 2024, this time to lead the OSTP. As director, he will help set the course for federal technology policy and coordinate with fellow government agencies, as well as external partners, to execute policy directives.
During his confirmation hearing in February, Kratsios confirmed his major priorities will be emerging technology, namely artificial intelligence.
Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Tx., congratulated Kratsios in an X post on Tuesday following the confirmation.
“Now more than ever, we need leaders who will unleash American innovation,” Cruz wrote. “I look forward to working together to keep America at the forefront of emerging technologies like AI and quantum computing.”
Kratsios is succeeding the Biden administration’s OSTP Director Arati Prabhakar in the role. On his new professional X account, he wrote that his office will work to ensure America maintains leadership in emerging technology innovation.
It’s an honor to serve as Director of the [White House] Office of Science & Technology Policy,” Kratsios said. “Advancing American dominance in AI, emerging tech, and breakthrough science has never been so critical.”
